Asia continues to provide promising economic prospects and improved quality of life that appeal to professionals and entrepreneurs both from within the region and across the globe, according to HSBC’s new Expat Explorer survey. 

While Singapore has again been rated by expats as the best country in the world to live and work, Malaysia offers simplicity and smooth transition for expats in finding accommodation (61%), organising healthcare (54%) and arranging childcare and schooling (52%).

The issue of security in mobile payments have sparked controversies due to a recent spate of scams involving ‘quick response’ (QR) codes in China’s Guandong province where it was reported that RM 55 million was stolen. 

According to Ivan Wen, General Manager of Quann Malaysia, there has been a number of cases where criminals have started using fake QR codes to steal data and money by sticking their own codes over a business’ original one to steal the scanner’s data or access the scanner’s smartphone to tap into their bank account.

Technology Park Malaysia Corporation Sdn Bhd (TPM) and Green Planet Energy Co. Ltd. (GPE) of South Korea have today inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly collaborate in the RE (Renewal Energy Project) Large scale solar Farm and Biomass projects.

Upon the signing of a definitive agreement between both parties, TPM is expected to become the exclusive distributor representative or resources of GPE’s solar-powered products, with technical support, in Malaysia for the next 10 years.

Quann Malaysia warns of rising QR Code Scams

Quann Malaysia warns Malaysians that scammers have started using fake ‘quick response’ (QR) codes to steal data and money from users. 

Quann’s warning comes at the back of an expected spike in the proliferation of QR Code usage as vendors such as WeChatPay and Alipay introduce eWallets (that involves using the mobile phone for QR code scanning) into Malaysia’s online payment ecosystem to drive retail consumerism.

Forest Industry Experts Meet Up 

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) recently held a Dialogue under “Malaysia’s Forest for All Forever” on Tuesday which allows media, businesses and forest managers as well as worker unions, environmental and indigenous community representatives to openly deliberate on the FSC’s forest certification scheme in this country. 

The FSC scheme is the most recognised by global markets, most trusted and supported by environmental organisations and provides a much-used platform for conflict resolution.

Alibaba Cloud, the cloud computing arm of Alibaba Group, launched its Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered city solution called City Brain initiative for the first time overseas, here in Malaysia. 

The initiative are  in collaboration with the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), the country’s digital economy development agency, and Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL), the city council in the capital, at a ceremony in Kuala Lumpur.
