ZEEPod is an offshore platform built to extract oil and gas that makes the development of marginal oil and gas fields in Malaysia possible by offering a technically sound, and economically viable solution. For such developments to be commercially attractive, the solution must be low in Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and with nil or negligible Operating Expenses (OPEX). The fit-for-purpose ZEEPod design offers an ideal solution for such developments, which improves both business and operating efficiency.
The first ZEEPod was installed and commissioned in July 2019 for Vestigo Petroleum Sdn Bhd (Vestigo), a subsidiary of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas), in the development of the Tembikai Non-Associated Gas (TNAG) facilities. The project was awarded to Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad (MMHE) for the Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) of TNAG. Vestigo was incorporated by Petronas for the development of marginal oil fields in Malaysia and their global operations.
“This project is the result of discipline and dedication from all parties involved in the first ZEEPod project. The fit-for-purpose offshore platform design will spur the development of marginal fields due to its easy assembly and economic viability. We are very proud of this first milestone and will continue to offer innovative solutions for our valuable customers,” said Wan Mashitah Wan Abdullah Sani, CEO of Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering Holdings Berhad.
ZEEPod is a Malaysian invention, patented by ZEE Engineering Sdn Bhd. It is a minimum facility Wellhead Platform (WHP). The modular nature of the ZEEPod substructure makes it easy to fabricate and could be installed by a low capacity crane barge thereby offering a functional and an economical WHP. ZEEPod has been designed to meet international standards.
“We are delighted to see the first ZEEPod platform safely installed offshore Malaysia on our gas field development. It’s been a great team effort by all involved. We look forward to installing additional ZEEPods in future as we apply our low-cost development solution to more marginal fields,” said Keith Collins, CEO of Vestigo Petroleum Sdn Bhd.
With the contracting strategy and the state-of-the art facilities at the Pasir Gudang yard, MMHE’s schedule for the project is for a duration of nine months. This short project duration will be very attractive to the oil producers.
The Tembikai field is located approximately 150 kilometers offshore Terengganu. TNAG is a remotely operated gas platform designed for a flowrate of 45 mmscfd with a pipe rating of 1500#. The platform is in 72.5-meter water depth and has six (6) 36-inch conductors. The top-side facility is compact in design resulting in a light weight top-side and substructure.
With the successful installation of the TNAG platform, there have been inquiries by local oil majors as well as from international oil companies in India, Indonesia, Thailand, Myanmar and Vietnam. As ZEEPod is a Malaysian invention, it aligns well with the overall development plan of the local oil and gas industry and the country’s aspiration to become a regional oil and gas hub.
