Straits Energy Resources Berhad 海峡能源有限公司 (“Straits” or “Company”), a Bursa Malaysia-listed company, announced today that its subsidiary, Benua Hijau Sdn Bhd (“Benua Hijau"), has achieved a key milestone in its multi-year reforestation project to restore degraded forest areas in the Setiu Wetlands State Park, one of the largest natural wetlands in the East Coast region of Peninsular Malaysia.
On October 31, 2024, Benua Hijau opened the Gelam Research Centre & Nursery, a dedicated facility that will prepare Gelam saplings and study the Gelam ecosystem and value chain in Setiu, Terengganu. The facility is set to play a critical role in Benua Hijau's massive ESG and CSR project that aims to plant 100,000 Pokok Gelam (Melaleuca) trees within five years, rehabilitating 200 acres of degraded forest land using the indigenous Melaleuca tree species. The Gelam Research Centre & Nursery will also serve as a training centre for new workers and interns, helping Benua Hijau meet its target of planting 20,000 saplings a year.
Benua Hijau also announced that it has begun engaging local and international corporate players and NGOs to contribute to the initiative as partners and sponsors, an important step towards the success and long-term sustainability of the project.
The launch of the Gelam Research Centre & Nursery was officiated by the Sultan of Terengganu, KDYMM Al-Wathiqu Billah Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin ibni Almarhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, in a ceremony witnessed by YBhg. Dato' Haji Mohd Fadali bin Yusof, Member of the Board of Trustees, Yayasan DiRaja Sultan Mizan, YM Tengku Mohd Arifin Bin Tengku Dato' A. Rahman, Director of the Terengganu State Park Management Council ("MPTN"), and YAM Tengku Seri Temenggong Raja, Dato' Seri Tengku Baharuddin Ibni Almarhum Sultan Mahmud Al-Muktafi Billah Shah, Chairman of Straits Energy Resources and Benua Hijau.
