In conjunction with World Earth Day, IKEA Malaysia celebrated a key milestone in its sustainability journey with the commissioning of 2,668 solar panels today at IKEA Damansara. The installation was officiated by YB Nik Nazmi bin Nik Ahmad, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability.
Covering approximately 12,000 square metres of rooftop area, the installation is expected to generate 2 MWh of energy annually—supplying up to 25% of the store’s energy needs and reducing carbon emissions by approximately 1,330 tonnes per year.
With this latest addition, IKEA Malaysia now has more than 20,437 solar panels installed across its stores and centres nationwide. The combined capacity of these installations brings IKEA Malaysia’s total renewable energy generation to 6.3 MWh annually.
“Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do at IKEA, driven by our vision to create a better everyday life for the many people,” said Malcolm Pruys, Country Retail Director of IKEA Malaysia. “We are committed to creating a positive impact—for people and for the planet—and we believe that leadership starts with action. As a retailer, we recognise the environmental footprint of our daily operations, and we are constantly exploring new, more sustainable ways of working. This new solar installation is an important step in our journey to becoming a climate-positive business.”
In his keynote address, YB Nik Nazmi bin Nik Ahmad highlighted the crucial role of the private sector in driving Malaysia’s climate goals. “The transition toward a low-carbon, climate-resilient future is not a journey the Government can undertake alone. It must be a whole-of-nation effort—and the private sector is an essential partner in driving our sustainability agenda forward. IKEA is showing that doing good for the planet and doing good business go hand in hand,” he said.
In addition to solar energy adoption, IKEA Malaysia continues to invest in sustainable store operations and reduce its carbon footprint across the value chain. IKEA Cheras was the first IKEA store globally to achieve both Green Building Index (GBI) Malaysia Gold certification and LEED Gold certification—an achievement later replicated by IKEA Batu Kawan. The company is also expanding its electric vehicle fleet as part of its goal to make 100% of home deliveries using more sustainable transport solutions by 2030.
The company aims to continue leading by example. It was among the first retailers to phase out single-use plastics, one of the earliest to fully transition to LED lighting, and continues to inspire and enable Malaysians to live healthier and more sustainable lives at home through its range of affordable, energy-efficient solutions.
