Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company Sdn. Bhd was announced as one of the recipients for the Recognition of Achievement Award from the “MY AMCHAM CARES 2018” program for the first time due to its commitment in demonstrating best practices in the implementation of corporate citizenship or corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects in Malaysia.
The MY AMCHAM CARES’ annual survey benchmarks members’ corporate citizenship and CSR initiatives across four key pillars: Strategy, Measurability, Sustainability, and Communication.
Only 22 member companies had high scores across these four pillars this year, which includes Starbucks Malaysia. AMCHAM has also been working with the United Nations and Economic Planning Unit of the Ministry of Economic Affairs Malaysia in order to provide a clearer roadmap for member companies to support local and global goals.
“We are very thankful for this notable honor, and this recognition will only motivate us to work harder to continue our work here with the Malaysian community.
“As good neighbors, we get involved with local efforts to bring people together and create positive change whenever we can. We also share our customers' commitment to the environment. And we believe in the importance of caring for our planet and working with and encouraging others to do the same.
“As a company that relies on an agricultural product, it makes good business sense. And as people living in the world, it is simply the right thing to do,” said said Starbucks Malaysia and Brunei chief executive officer, Sydney Quays.
Over the years, Starbucks Malaysia has more than 5,449 volunteers who participated in more than 43 projects, contributing more than 70,497 community service hours during its Global Month of Service (GMoS) every April, a month where Starbucks partners and customers connect to dedicate and focus on contributing back to the communities where Starbucks operates around the world.
In 2018, Starbucks Malaysia celebrated its eight annual GMoS to establish a community edible garden for Perumahan Awam Rumah Panjang Ikan Emas community in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.
More than 150 people participated, bringing together Starbucks partners, customers, non-profit organizations, civic leaders, business partners and the community members. The GMoS this year, also raised money through the retail of unique reusable cups to establish the ‘Green Outreach Program’, which promotes environmental awareness and sustainability.
“We at Starbucks are honoured to have been recognized for this award. It has always been very important to our company as well as our partners to give back to the local communities where our stores operate.
“Leadership and sustainability go hand-in-hand, and even as a business we believe in the power of the coffeehouse to bring people together to make a difference – it’s all part of being a good neighbour and a sustainable company,” said Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company corporate social responsibility (CSR) manager, Rina Siew.
MY AMCHAM CARES is a core AMCHAM program that celebrates and promotes best practices within the corporate citizenship and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs implemented by AMCHAM members.
Through MY AMCHAM CARES, the Chamber encourages members to reflect upon their existing programs and to consider how projects implemented at the local level can be strengthened and best contribute to national and global goals.
