Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&NHB) has embarked on its second school recycling campaign with Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) to inculcate recycling as a way of life among students in Petaling Jaya.
Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&NHB) has embarked on its second school recycling campaign with Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) to inculcate recycling as a way of life among students in Petaling Jaya.
Following the successful maiden campaign last year which collected 27,269.3kg of recyclable items, Kempen Kitar Semula F&N & MBPJ 2019 aims to maintain the recycling momentum by advocating the 5R philosophy of Recycle, Reuse, Reduce, Rethink and Reinvent in pre-schools, primary schools and secondary schools under the jurisdiction of MBPJ, throughout the six-month campaign.
Organised in collaboration with the Petaling Utama District Education Office and Tetra Pak, Kempen Kitar Semula F&N & MBPJ 2019 is held from March 1 to August 30 in the hopes of empowering the children by educating them on how they can create a huge impact on environmental conservation despite their young age, through recycling.
F&NHB head of communication and corporate affairs, Karan Tan said that the Group felt privileged to be given the opportunity to work together with MBPJ in organising the campaign for the second time.
“We are truly honoured and thankful to MBPJ for placing their trust and confidence in our commitment and capabilities to imbue the children with a sense of responsibility in protecting the environment from an early age.
“When F&N started this initiative more than a decade ago, we strongly believe that good recycling habits should begin with the young.”
She believes education, coupled with rewards, can significantly increase children’s awareness and love for the environment.
“It also encourages them to think critically and adopt responsible environmental behaviours in their daily lives.
“Hence, we are dedicated to making the recycling campaign a huge success the second time around,” she added.
Kempen Kitar Semula F&N & MBPJ 2019 challenges students to collect the highest amount of recyclable materials per student such as paper, aluminium, plastics, beverage cartons and e-waste in the hopes of winning cash prizes worth RM22,560 offered by F&NHB.
This year’s campaign also encourages schools to accumulate the largest haul of styrofoam per student to win RM1,200, courtesy of MBPJ.
“Instilling good recycling habits in children since young can greatly shape their minds and develop first-class attitudes towards preserving the environment.
“Through this campaign, we are confident that students can share their knowledge and experiences with their parents and families, so that they too, can make recycling a part of their daily routine.
“We hope that our contribution in the campaign and PJ Eco Recycling Plaza will be able to assist MBPJ’s goal of achieving its ‘PJ Sustainable 2030’ target in making Petaling Jaya a clean, sustainable and liveable city by 2030,” Tan shared.
Last year, F&NHB also partnered with MBPJ to establish a learning and activity centre for children and the community, at PJ Eco Recycling Plaza which is expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2019.
Located in SS8 Petaling Jaya, PJ Eco Recycling Plaza is Malaysia's first project that showcases new products made from recyclable materials.
The building will have an exhibition corner, upcycling workshop and activity space for the public to learn about conserving the environment in a fun and interactive way.
Tan added that the partnership would enable F&NHB to decorate two walls on Level 1 where the Children Play Area is located at PJ Eco Recycling Plaza, with creative mural art that serves as a physical reminder of the importance of encouraging children and their families to recycle for a better tomorrow.
“The first wall will showcase R Boy, the mascot of the '5R Adventure Program' that visited pre-schools across Petaling Jaya last year to educate the children on how to recycle properly in an interactive way. The painting demonstrates how recycling can be fun and enjoyable, and can unlock children’s creativity when they think of fresh ideas to create new items from recyclables.
“Meanwhile, the second mural illustrates endangered animal species living in their natural habitat. It aims to remind children on how crucial it is to protect the environment to balance both the needs of humans and wildlife.
“We hope that the mural will ignite a better understanding among the younger generation of how Malaysian wildlife faces extinction in the future if we do not do our part in taking care of the planet’s biodiversity.
Besides the two murals, F&NHB is also contributing learning tools such as jigsaw puzzles and memory games for children who visit the Children Play Area at PJ Eco Recycling Plaza.
