PETALING JAYA, 9 December 2020 – WCT Holdings Berhad (“WCT” or “the Group), a leading engineering and construction as well as property company, has been awarded the Company of The Year Award for Community Sports Development in the Engineering, Construction & Property Development Category at the Sustainability & CSR Malaysia Awards 2020.
The notable honour was in recognition of WCT KIDSS 2019 – WCT’s flagship community sports development programme. In 2019, WCT launched the fifth edition of the programme with a four day basketball training and one-day friendly 3-on-3 tournament for 40 local school children aged 9 to 12 years old including 10 children from Yayasan Sunbeams Homes. The programme is aimed at providing free sports training, encouraging an active healthy lifestyle among children and promoting social interaction through team sports, while inculcating the spirit of patriotism and unity.
Dato’ Lee Tuck Fook, Group Managing Director of WCT said, “The ‘Company of the Year’ award is a testament of our community-building efforts in Malaysia. WCT is committed to contributing to the development of the local communities and empowering children to make a positive social impact. Through this initiative, the Group has created a sustainable platform to identify and nurture young sporting talents, and ultimately groom them into well-rounded individuals. We aim to continuously organise programmes as such to give back to the society.”
Through the WCT KIDSS programme, WCT Group has pledged its support to target 4.5 and 4.7 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (“SDGs”) 4 on Quality Education. The programme was initiated in 2013 and to date, it has benefitted over 600 children at grassroots level as it nurtures them with good sportsmanship, fair play and teamwork.
Over the years, WCT Group has focused on programmes that supported the underprivileged communities and has touched the lives of many less fortunate families in the country, including bringing cheers to the needy elderlies and children, especially during the festive seasons. WCT Group through its retail malls and hotels have also hosted several community initiatives such as donating books to underprivileged children, supporting single mothers by providing them with financial opportunities as well as distributing food aid.
Aside from giving back to the community, WCT’s commitment to environmental management best practice is another area of focus for the company. The Group is gradually reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse throughout its operations, supporting target 12.5 of SDGs 12 on Responsible Consumption and Production. The Group has collaborated with Cenviro Sdn Bhd for Recycle for Life (RfL) programme as part of the Group’s
sustainability initiative. A long-term waste segregation initiative was introduced at the Group’s headquarters in line with its effort in creating awareness to all employees on the importance of waste management and encouraging good recycling habits amongst its employees.
Dato’ Lee added, “We will continue to work together with our partners, employees, customers, communities and non-profit associations to continue to integrate and implement sustainability in the way we manage and operate our businesses. As a Group, we are focused on driving collective economic growth, focused environmental management and meaningful engagement with our communities.”
