KUALA LUMPUR, 4 APRIL 2022 – The Board of Directors of Duopharma Biotech Berhad (“Duopharma Biotech” or “the Company”) wishes to announce Duopharma Biotech's environmental pledges in conjunction with its latest Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) roadmap. For the environment pillar within the ESG strategy, the Company targets Climate Performance as a key focus area, aiming to reduce and minimise activities that contribute to an adverse climate impact. In particular, Duopharma Biotech aspires to achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2030, Net Zero Carbon Emissions by 2050 and replace 50% of Single Use plastics with Biodegradable plastics within its operations by 2026.

“At Duopharma Biotech, we have aligned our environmental pledges within our ESG roadmap with the Government’s environmental targets as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. In achieving environmental goals, it is crucial to have collaborations with like-minded organisations. For our Climate Performance targets, we are working with the United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia & Brunei (UNGCMYB) to train our team on climate awareness, carbon neutrality and net zero awareness, as well as for our Annual Sustainability Report, which is published online for all investors and stakeholders to review. As climate science is still seeing new developments, we are certainly paying close attention in order to implement new knowledge into our strategy,” commented Leonard Ariff Abdul Shatar, Group Managing Director, Duopharma Biotech Berhad. 

“For any organisation, the key to achieving ESG goals is to fully integrate these goals with the rest of its operations and undertakings. ESG initiatives cannot be seen as incidental to the main business endeavour but should instead be integral to the company’s holistic operations. Since Duopharma Biotech officially commenced our ESG journey in 2016, we have put in place structures and systems to create a high level of awareness among all personnel and to closely align our business strategies with our ESG strategies and goals. We are confident these initiatives will help us achieve our Climate Performance goals as well as other ESG goals,” he added.

Recently, while launching the GLC Open Day organised by the Ministry of Finance, Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri Yaakob called upon all GLCs and GLICs to have medium-term targets and net zero carbon targets by 2050 in support of the Government’s objective to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, as announced in the 12th Malaysia Plan. In addition, he urged the companies to invest in sustainable and climate-friendly initiatives.

Systematic approach drives Climate Performance goals

Duopharma Biotech’s goal to reduce emissions looks at three scopes – direct emissions from operations, indirect emissions from purchased energy and all other emissions associated with the company's activities. To achieve its Climate Performance goals, Duopharma Biotech targets to reduce emissions by improving energy efficiency, stepping up circular economy initiatives, as well as achieve carbon neutrality by balancing emissions with purchase of carbon offset credits, investing in forestation and carbon sequestration and studying new technology and digitalisation that can more efficiently reduce emissions.
