Since opening its doors about six years ago, Sunway Medical Centre Velocity (SMCV) has grown to become a leading tertiary hospital in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. As part of Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG), SMCV has continuously expanded its capabilities across a range of medical specialties and services, with 6 centres of excellence, namely Heart and Lung Centre, Neuroscience Centre, Digestive Health Centre, Orthopaedic Centre, Women’s Health Centre and Children’s Health and Development Centre.
In line with its commitment to delivering accessible, high-quality medical care, SMCV is now embarking on a multi-phase expansion to meet the growing needs of rising ageing population and the increasing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
The ongoing expansion includes the expansion of its medical wards to accommodate increased inpatient capacity, a revamped Accident & Emergency (A&E) department, and the enhancement of specialist services to better support evolving healthcare needs of the local and regional communities it serves.
Ms Susan Cheow, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) SMCV emphasised the hospital’s dedication to continuous improvement, stating, “Since its inception in 2019, SMCV has made significant strides and we are committed to providing a more comprehensive and integrated healthcare experience through this expansion. Beyond just increasing our capacity, we are enhancing our patients’ journey that integrates advanced medical care, accessibility, and holistic support to better serve our community.”
Expansion of Inpatient Wards
SMCV is increasing its inpatient ward capacity to 247 beds with the addition of a newly constructed medical ward located on M Floor at Tower B, situated just above the A&E department. The new 18-bedded medical ward featured a contemporary design with a calming ambience, ensuring patients experience comfort throughout their recovery. With rising patient admissions driven by chronic diseases and post-acute care needs, the additional capacity enables SMCV to serve more patients while maintaining high standards of personalised clinical care.
Upgraded A&E Department to Address Urgent Medical Needs
Alongside the expansion of the inpatient ward, the hospital’s A&E department will undergo major upgrades to improve patient flow and critical care delivery. The expansion introduces two dedicated entrances for better accessibility and a re-designed registration area with increased seating capacity to comfortably accommodate patients and their loved ones. The department’s layout will be restructured to create a smoother and more intuitive patient journey, with registration, treatment and consultation rooms, radiology and pharmacy services now conveniently located on the same floor.
The upgraded emergency department features a total of three consultation rooms, four green zone observation bays, seven yellow zone bays including an asthma bay, and two red zone bays for high-dependency cases. Furthermore, a new Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) room will be available to facilitate faster diagnosis. Dr Wee Tong Ming, Medical Director and Consultant Emergency Physician at SMCV, highlights the impact of these enhancements, stating, “These upgrades enhance our ability to respond to acute conditions such as stroke, heart attacks, and trauma more efficiently. By reducing patient waiting times and ensuring immediate access to life-saving treatment, we are further strengthening our emergency care capabilities and improving patient outcomes.”
Bringing Specialist Care and Screenings Under One Roof
In addition to the expansions, SMCV has also marked a major milestone in February 2024 with the opening of the new hospital tower (Tower A) lobby and outpatient departments. The main lobby is thoughtfully designed to enhance the patient experience, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. With convenient dual access from both the main road and a scenic garden options, it provides ease of entry for visitors. The main lobby also features a food and beverage outlet, offering a convenient dining option for patients and their companions, ensuring comfort and accessibility during their visit. Additionally, Tower A is also connected to Tower B via link bridge walkway, ensuring seamless movement between the two towers.
With the opening of Tower A, SMCV currently houses a total of 92 consultation suites along with a new Health Screening Centre (HSC) located on Level 2. The HSC operates as a one-stop centre, providing a fully integrated screening experience. All diagnostic and radiology services including X-rays and mammograms, are now located on the same floor, eliminating the need for patients to move between levels. Additionally, the centre features a dedicated workspace for patients and accompanying individuals, reaffirming SMCV’s commitment to both medical efficiency and patient-centric care.
Future Expansion Plans
Looking ahead, SMCV’s vision for Tower A is to develop it into a 22-storey integrated medical facility. The lower ten floors will be dedicated to the expansion of facilities for clinical services, including additional consultation suites, inpatient wards with a combined capacity of more than 300 beds, operating theatres and intensive care facilities. Meanwhile, the upper twelve floors will support a mixture of non-clinical services, including a wellness centre, lifestyle services, and post-hospitalisation care to provide a holistic healthcare experience.
