Dr Wan Azizah was born in December 3, 1952 in Singapore but grew up in Kedah. She went on to pursue her tertiary education at Tunku Kurshiah College in Seremban before furthering her studies in medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. Before graduating as a qualified ophthalmologist from Dublin’s Royal College of Surgeons, she was the recipient of the MacNaughton Jones gold medal in 1977.

Dr Wan Azizah served as a government doctor for 14 years before deciding to focus on volunteering work, when her husband, atuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was appointed the Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia in 1993. As part of her voluntary pursuits, she became a patron of MAKNA (Majlis Kanser Nasional or National Cancer Council) in that period.

She has a good sense of humour
Dr Wan Azizah has captured the heart of Malaysian with her sense of humour in social media such as in Instagram and Twitter. Most of her postings in Instagram are both inspiring and amusing as she managed to take a candid picture despite being busy with political issue. Daughter Nurul Izzah once mentioned to The Sun that, "She has a great sense of humour and she always makes us laugh. She could have her own stand-up comedy show." She is an active user of Twitter and Instagram. She engages with the rakyat via Twitter, answering questions and giving statements. Not just that, she also has an Instagram account and use it to update her followers about current issues.

She believes in the power of women.
Even after her husband, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was sent to jail, she never once gave up on proving the innocence of her husband. She also continued to be the president of Parti Keadilan even when her ambition was never to become a politician, let alone Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister. However, when Anwar was sentenced to jail in 1998 and again in 2015, she stepped up to aid her husband. Dr Azizah has proven that women are capable to do many awesome things. We just have to stay strong and have faith.

She is the second woman to lead a political party (Parti Keadilan Rakyat) in Malaysia's history (Ganga Nayar founded and became the first president of the Malaysian Workers' Party in 1978).
