The Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA) and Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) co-organised a landmark student conference yesterday at the Faculty of Administrative Science and Policy Studies, UiTM Seremban, designed to cultivate future leaders in governance. Themed “Corporate Governance and Innovation: Maintaining Competitive Edge,” the event brought together 400 students, aiming to empower emerging talent in the corporate governance field.
MAICSA President, Dato’ Akbar bin Moidunny, highlighted the theme’s relevance, stating, “This year’s focus on innovation in governance goes beyond compliance and accountability—it emphasises embracing new strategies to help organisations stay agile and competitive. As governance professionals, we must champion ethical standards while driving change, ensuring sustainable success in today’s rapidly evolving business landscape.”
Paving the Way to Global Recognition
UiTM Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industry, Community & Alumni Network), Prof. TPr. Dr. Jamalunlaili Abdullah, reinforced the alignment of UiTM’s vision to become a 'Globally Renowned University' by 2025 with MAICSA’s unique position as Malaysia’s only globally recognised body offering chartered governance qualifications. He remarked, “Through MAICSA’s collaboration with UiTM, students gain access to internationally accredited governance qualifications, equipping them to compete as future leaders on the global stage across the governance fields.”
Rising Demand for Governance Professionals in Malaysia
As the number of businesses in Malaysia continues to surge, the demand for expertise in corporate governance has never been more important. The latest statistics from the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) reveal that as of December 2023, over 1.53 million companies had been incorporated in the country, with an additional 45,855 new companies registered in 2024 alone, reflecting more than 9.12 million business activities. “This growth underscores the critical demand for governance professionals such as company secretaries and chartered governance experts, who are essential in ensuring strict compliance and upholding regulatory standards, stated Tuan Khuzairi bin Yahaya, Deputy CEO of SSM.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders
The conference featured dynamic panel discussions, inspiring keynote talks, and interactive sessions, giving students valuable insights and nurturing their creativity. MAICSA also celebrated young talent through initiatives like the Company Secretary Award and Young Governance Professionals Award, encouraging students to integrate innovation with ethical integrity. Such initiatives are essential to building a strong talent pipeline, ensuring effective succession planning, and promoting governance as an exciting and rewarding career path.
