Russian power and metals holding En+ (MOEX: ENPG), a leading global producer of low-carbon aluminium and renewable energy, has completed comprehensive modernisation of hydraulic unit No.1 at Bratsk HPP (Irkutsk region) as part of its large-scale New Energy hydropower plants modernisation programme.
The modernisation included installation of a new runner and replacement or repair of all main and auxiliary components. As a result, the equipment reliability has improved, and the hydraulic unit's efficiency increased by 5.5 percentage points to 96.5%, enabling higher power generation from the same volume of water passing through the turbines.
Hydraulic unit No.1 became the 16th unit modernised under En+'s New Energy programme. Two more runners are scheduled for replacement by 2026.
Vladimir Kolmogorov, En+ CEO, commented: "The New Energy programme continues to enhance our HPPs' reliability and increase green power generation capacity to meet growing energy demand. The cumulative effect from modernisation of main equipment at our hydropower plants is already equivalent to building a new 300-400 MW hydropower plant. We will continue upgrading equipment at En+ HPPs to strengthen the region's power system."
The New Energy Programme targets large-scale upgrades and replacement of core equipment at four major En+ Group's hydropower plants in Siberia - Krasnoyarsk, Bratsk, Irkutsk, and Ust-Ilimsk HPPs. Total programme investments are estimated at RUB 21 billion (USD 234.1 million).
At Bratsk HPP, the New Energy programme launched in 2007. The first two phases included modernisation of 12 hydraulic units. In 2021, the next phase of technical upgrades began, with plans to replace 6 hydraulic unit runners by 2026. Upon completion, all hydraulic unit runners at Bratsk HPP will have been replaced.
