FedEx Express (FedEx) opened its door to an upgraded FedEx Penang Gateway facility, the largest integrated logistics facility of its kind in Penang.
FedEx has invested RM 17.6 million for the new facility which will serve as an integrated warehouse and sorting facility for both FedEx and TNT operations in the region.
“This is a significant investment on our part to connect Malaysia’s northern region to the world.
“At FedEx, we are committed to the growth of Penang’s logistics infrastructure, optimizing both our regional and global connectivity to support local businesses and creating more possibilities for large, medium and small enterprises to import and export,” said FedEx Express (North and South Pacific) senior vice president Kawal Preet.
The facility is expected to become a major hub in the northern region of Malaysia and also as a key gateway for FedEx Asian and Trans-Asian flights.
The warehouse, measuring 52,000 square feet , is also the first facility of its kind in Malaysia to feature x-ray scanning for 100% of all outbound packages.
“This is made possible with the use of advanced conveyor belts and sorting systems as well as outbound x-ray scanning equipment capable of handling more than 2,700 packages per hour.
“The x-ray scanning will ensure that all the shipments are secured to go on board to avoid any incidents. This in turn, promotes the transportation industry as I am sure all recipients prefers to have their packages to be verified as safe.
“Soon we will also feature the x-ray scans for our Kuala Lumpur facility,” he revealed.
With the capacity to move up to 2,700 packages per hour, the Penang facility will be serviced by two dedicated Boeing 767 freighters capable of next-day deliveries to US.
In the pipeline for 2019, FedEx also plans to launch two more stations, one in Johor and another facility on the mainland side of Penang, specifically in Batu Kawan.
“Batu Kawan is one of the gems on the mainland. We are experiencing rapid growth in terms of volume on the mainland and we are looking forward to serving our customers there.
“We are also catering to the growing small and medium enterprises which account for 36% of the gross domestic product.
“By providing our gateway in Penang, we are opening up the businesses in the northern region to the world,” he added.
