KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA; 2 NOVEMBER 2020 – Fostering and celebrating the spirit of giving back, Sunway Putra Hotel Kuala Lumpur has donated over 5,000 eggs to support families of underserved communities during these trying times. As part of the group’s ongoing efforts to address food security, this community out-reach programme will benefit 200 households working in collaboration with Kechara Soup Kitchen.
According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)-UNICEF study conducted in May 2020, one in four heads of households were unemployed during the movement control order (MCO), and that most of those who lost their jobs have no employment protection.
UNICEF studies also showed lower-income families have been struggling to cope, with families drawing monthly income of below RM5,000 forced to consume less food despite spending more money on it.
“Demand for food assistance and daily essentials are rising at an extraordinary rate, particularly during this time. We are honoured to do our part and hope the families will benefit from this contribution. We wish everyone well. Together, we can and will get through this,” said Sunway Putra Hotel Kuala Lumpur Senior General Manager Mr. Wilfred Yeo.

This initiative is in line with Goal 2: Zero Hunger in fostering a better future for the communities in which Sunway builds, serves and lives. This global movement and commitment to end hunger is vital particularly in lifting the underserved communities.
Sunway recently embarked on its Food for Thought campaign, targeting to distribute 8,100 packed meals to the urban poor in the Klang Valley needing nutritional support during the conditional movement control order (CMCO) period. The Food for Thought Campaign aims to benefit those most impacted by the recent CMCO – the homeless and those residing in People’s Housing Project (PPR) flats, where sole breadwinners have lost their sources of income. The food packs are provided by malls in the Klang Valley under the Sunway Malls’ umbrella, namely Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity Mall and Sunway Putra Mall.
Sunway also kick started its #SunwayforGood Food Bank programme that aims to bring together Malaysians in the spirit of helping families in the bottom 40% (B40) income group threatened by hunger due to COVID-19. The #SunwayforGood Food Bank programme pledges to collect 40,000 kilogrammes of food, with the aim to surpass that target by end-2020. The collection intends to feed 25,000 individuals in B40 families worst hit during the pandemic throughout the country. To address food security, Sunway is set to launch Sunway FutureX Farm. Located in Sunway City Kuala Lumpur, it is Malaysia’s first-ever skills building hub for urban farming professionals, tech companies, researchers and young talents to collaborate and to create transformative solutions focusing on food and agritech. This initiative is in line with Sunway City Kuala Lumpur’s vision to be the test bed for Sunway Living Laboratory that aims to continuously engenders within a thriving ecosystem.
