KUALA LUMPUR, 24 May 2021: Lotuss Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (formerly known as Tesco Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd) (Lotus’s Malaysia) is pleased to share that a total of 100 asnaf (underprivileged) families have benefitted from the retailer’s seasonal corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
The asnaf families have all received RM600 worth of aid, with the first RM300 in the form of household goods contributed through Lotus’s internal CSR, the Kiriman Ikhlas Raya (KIR) and the remaining RM300 in the form of vouchers through the partner and customer-supported CSR initiative called the Tabung Kiriman Ikhlas (TKI).
For the KIR initiative, Lotus’s has teamed up with the Majlis Agama Islam for Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory, Kelantan and Johor; and Lembaga Zakat Selangor and Kedah, for the distribution of the RM30,000 Zakat Wakalah contributed by Lotus’s colleagues.
Meanwhile, TKI initiative was able to raise an additional RM30,000 for the same asnaf families ahead of its 2 June 2021 deadline. With every purchase of at least RM18 of All Kurma Sdn Bhd products, RM1 was channelled to the TKI. All Kurma product ranges include Siafa, Mahadhi, al-Hisham, Masafii, Date Crown and Springdale Cottage.
“We’re very pleased to be able to help the asnaf community this Ramadan and just in time for Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration. We know that many have been economically impacted because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and we hope that our combined contribution of RM600 will help bring relief and joy to these families,” said Lotus’s Head of Communications and CSR, Hanim Hamdan.
“We are especially grateful to our partners Majlis Agama Islam for Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory, Kelantan and Johor; Lembaga Zakat Selangor and Kedah as well as All Kurma in making both our KIR and TKI initiatives a success. We look forward to similar collaborations with our partners in the future.”
A spokesperson from All Kurma said that the company is pleased to be collaborating with Lotus’s for its first foray into customer-led CSR initiative.
“We are pleased to collaborate with Lotus’s during this holy month of Ramadan where we and our customers were able to come together to help those less fortunate by just purchasing some of our products,” said the spokesperson.
“At All Kurma, we believe that the pursuit to healthier and better living starts with the food we consume daily and it is astounding to see what an impact of RM1 per purchase can make to the asnaf community who might not had the chance to experience these type of delicacies before,” the continued.
The distribution of the goods and vouchers was done throughout Ramadan with the final one taking place in Kuala Lumpur on 4 May 2021 during an event held by Majlis Agama Islam Wilayah Persekutuan (MAIWP) and with the Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office (Islamic Affairs), Senator Datuk Seri Dr Zulkifli Mohamad Al-Bakri in attendance.
Lotus’s, as Tesco Malaysia, had in 2019 collaborated with Pusat Pungutan Zakat (PPZ) and MAIWP, in distributing household goods to 12 asnaf families located in Projek Perumahan Rakyat (PPR) Desa Rejang, Setapak. In 2020, the Zakat Wakalah distribution was allocated to 60 colleagues who found themselves to be the sole breadwinners as their family members have been made redundant because of Covid-19.
Meanwhile, Lotus’s collaborated with partners Mondelez International and non-governmental organization Food Aid Foundation (FAF) last year for the first TKI. Funds collected were converted to food items including rice, cooking oil, canned tuna, cream crackers, cereal flakes, milk, honey and instant beverage mix which were then distributed to FAF’s beneficiaries across Peninsula Malaysia.
