The Joint Committee on Climate Change (JC3) is pleased to announce that it will host its flagship event on climate change, FinanceforChange Virtual Conference, from23 to 25 June 2021. The conference aims to share knowledge, best practicesandsolutions in tackling climate change. Local, regional and global leaders in their fields,including financial practitioners, policymakers and advocates, will discuss abroadrange of topics to inform and encourage actions by the financial sector in leadingandsupporting the transition to a greener economy.
“The financial sector is uniquely placed to play a catalytic role in enabling thetransitiontowards a low-carbon economy. Given the central role of the financial sector intheeconomy, financial institutions need to take more concrete actions toscaleupsustainable finance, and to advance climate risk management and adaptation, aswell as climate-related disclosures,” said Jessica Chew, Deputy Governor, BankNegara Malaysia and Co-Chair of JC3.
The conference is another key initiative towards reinforcing the importanceof asustainable future for Malaysia. According to Datuk Zainal Izlan Zainal Abidin,Deputy Chief Executive, Securities Commission Malaysia and Co-ChairofJC3, "By bringing various financial players onto one platform, FinanceforChangeencourages inter-industry collaborations and public-private partnerships. Theresponsibility for tackling climate change rests with all of us, thus we must givethiscritical issue our collective attention and effort."
The conference will feature more than 70 notable speakers including TengkuDatukSeri Utama Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Minister of Finance; Tan Sri Dr. JemilahMahmood, Special Advisor on Public Health to Prime Minister of Malaysia; DatukNorShamsiah Mohd Yunus, Governor BNM; Datuk Syed Zaid Albar, Executive Chairman SC; Sir David Attenborough, Broadcaster and Naturalist; and Lewis Pugh, UnitedNations Ocean Advocate.
The first two days of the conference will focus on the financial sector, andhowsustainability can be integrated into business decision-making at the boardandmanagement levels. The agenda includes practical workshops and case studies, withparallel technical tracks for financial practitioners in institutional banking, consumerbanking, asset management, insurance and takaful, as well as key support functionssuch as human resources, procurement and facilities management.
The agenda for the third day of the conference is curated for the privatesector, including clients and investees of Malaysian financial institutions. Participantswill benefit from a better understanding of how changing regulations and requirements, such as the recently launched Climate Change and Principle-based Taxonomy, will impact them as borrowers and investees. Participants will also learn more about thesignificant opportunities presented by the green agenda and sustainable finance.
