Lim explained, “The role of a professional accountant today is incredibly diverse and is evolving very quickly, hence we need to adapt just as fast and take immediate steps now so as to ensure we stay relevant and succeed in the future. With the Career Navigator, accounting professionals at every level, including students who are just breaking into the job market, have the opportunity to explore over 100 different accounting positions, learn more about the skills and capabilities they need to excel, and connect with employers to find the latest job offerings best-suited to their capabilities and interests.”
The ACCA Career Navigator is the result of an extensive two-year research with over 2,000 participants within the global finance community to identify what businesses and organisations need, today and in the future. In the current environment, there are critical social, environmental and economic challenges to address, and organisations need the right talent with the right abilities to navigate much-needed recovery in the wake of the pandemic. Findings from this landmark research are also presented in detail in the “Professional Accountants at the Heart of Sustainable Organisations” report.
Of particular relevance for aspiring and young accounting professionals are the four emerging career zones of the coming decade, which spans all sectors and industries. With the Career Navigator, students are able to plan their pathway based on four broad roles identified by ACCA as the Assurance Provider, Enterprise Analyst, Stakeholder Reporter, and Transformation Driver. Each of these zones encompasses different skill sets that extend beyond traditional accountancy roles, empowering graduates with future-ready knowledge to guide organisations in the coming years.
Lim elaborated: “In the next decade, you will see an accelerated demand for accountants who have the capability to create long-term, sustainable value for the organisations they serve; who are analytical and are capable to bring data to life; those who will provide confidence to capital markets, investors and wider stakeholder groups and those who can report performance in more meaningful ways.”
Chan Wai Mun, a student from Sunway College Ipoh was excited with the features of the Career Navigator in helping her chart her future in corporate finance. “The tool has helped me visualise my pathway more clearly. I have a particular interest in Initial Public Offering (IPO) and Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A), and I plan to take the Advanced Audit and Assurance (AAA) and Advanced Financial Management (AFM) papers to better equip myself with the relevant skills.”
For top achiever Chong Jia En of Sunway TES, who aspires to lead audit teams, the way forward lies in gaining experience across a wide range of industries. “The Career Navigator has shown me that I am well-suited to be an Assurance Provider, with career options such as ESG Assurer, External Auditor and IA Risk Professional. Which is why I am particularly keen to hone my critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. I also plan to develop my leadership, communication, and creative skills so I can work with professionals at every level of the organisation and apply creative solutions to problems.”
Similarly, Tung Giim Chyn from University Tunku Abdul Rahman finds the Career Navigator offers practical and reassuring guidance. “I am most definitely an Enterprise Analyst. I would like to be bringing data to life in order to assess the organization’s performance, provide insights and suggest improvements to help the organization achieve their business and sustainability goals. Building on my digital skills, embedded in the ACCA Qualification modules, would contribute greatly to my career in the future.”
For top scorer Oh Kai Wen from Sunway College Kuala Lumpur, the Career Navigator has reinforced her goal to be an external audit associate. “By allowing me to explore and discover more about my career path, I understand more about the nature of the profession and can better apply the analytical and critical thinking skills I have learned. To help me go further, I aim to improve my digital abilities through the Ethics and Professional Skills Module (EPSM) and keep upskilling to remain competitive.”
Lim said that in the process of rebuilding our economy, professional accountants need to step up and play a bigger role in creating, protecting and reporting long-term value. “We have a responsibility to support business decisions that have sustainable value for society, establish processes that protect sustainable value and help organisations report value to stakeholders in meaningful and transparent ways. Thus, preparing ourselves to meet the emerging career zones is an essential step in the right direction.”
“We are thrilled to continue supporting all our students on their journey to becoming fully qualified professional accountants, and look forward to working hand-in-hand with our future members to drive positive change in building sustainable businesses and a more robust and resilient economy for all Malaysians.”
