SHAH ALAM, 01 December 2021 – It is estimated that the current population of the Malayan Tapir sits between 1,100 to 1,500 in this country. Over three generations, the Malayan Tapir population has declined by more than 50%, largely due to the conversion of its habitat to palm oil plantations and other human developments. Due to the declining numbers of the Malayan Tapir, the species is officially listed as an endangered species under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010.
To help nourish and shelter the Malayan Tapirs, Canon Marketing Malaysia (“Canon”) extends its commitment to creating a greener and more sustainable environment through its annual One Canon One Tree initiative with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS). From today to 8 December 2021, Canon and MNS urge the public to play their part in the protection of endangered wildlife by planting virtual trees on the One Canon One Tree microsite. Each tree planted online will be physically sowed by both organizations at the Sungai Dusun Wildlife Conservation Centre that has safely rescued, treated and released many tapirs back to the wild.
In continuation to last years’ collaboration, the initiative aims to continue raising awareness about the Malayan Tapir, and their current status within our ecosystem.
“Canon is proud to wrap up the year with the One Canon One Tree initiative with our staff members to support the Malayan Tapir conservation efforts. Doing our part in preserving the flora and fauna, we are determined to keep this up through education and active participation via our sustainability exercises,” said Mr. Andrew Koh, President and CEO of Canon Marketing Malaysia.
