As industries across Malaysia continue to evolve and expand, the need for chartered secretaries and governance professionals is becoming increasingly pronounced. The Malaysian Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (MAICSA) is at the forefront of addressing this growing demand, supporting organisations in navigating complex regulatory compliances and ensuring effective corporate governance.
At the MAICSA’s Presidents’ Inauguration ceremony, where Dato’ Akbar Moidunny was inducted as the 29th President, he outlined his vision and goals for MAICSA. Under his leadership, the organisation is committed to advancing its core objectives. The Institute aims to elevate professional development by offering cutting-edge programmes, championing good governance and ethical practices across sectors, and enhancing member engagement through robust support and opportunities. Efforts will also focus on expanding MAICSA's influence and advocacy on both local and international stages, embracing technology to innovate its services, and fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity within the profession and the organisation.
MAICSA, the premier professional body for Chartered Secretaries and Chartered Governance Professionals in Malaysia, has a membership of more than 4,200 members (comprising Fellows and Associates) and Graduates, over 1,800 students and more than 600 Affiliates on its register. Established in 1959, the Institute is one of the distinguished Divisions of The Chartered Governance Institute (CGI) UK. It is also amongst one of the prescribed bodies in the Companies Act 2016 which recognises MAICSA members to act as Company Secretaries. MAICSA members are qualified individuals who have successfully completed the Chartered Governance Qualifying Programme (CGQP).
According to a report published by the World Bank Group in 2022 and the latest data from the Malaysia Statistical Business Register (DOSM, 2020), Malaysia is home to approximately 1.15 million business establishments. Of these, 78.4% are microenterprises, while 21.6% are classified as small and medium enterprises (SMEs). SMEs form the backbone of the Malaysian economy, representing 97.2% of total business establishments, contributing 38.2% to the nation’s GDP, and providing employment to 7.3 million people. Given their significant role in the economy, it is imperative that these businesses engage skilled company secretaries and governance professionals to ensure sustainable growth and adherence to regulatory standards. At MAICSA, we are committed to advocating for this vital profession by bridging the gap between rising demand and the supply of skilled governance professionals, ensuring that businesses uphold the highest standards of governance.
The rise in new company registrations, particularly in the post-pandemic era, coupled with the increasing number of entrepreneurial ventures, has significantly heightened the need for good corporate governance, compliance, and corporate administration services. As businesses across various sectors, including technology startups and established financial institutions, expand and evolve, they increasingly recognise the crucial role of chartered secretaries in ensuring transparency, regulatory adherence, and organisational efficiency. Additionally, the growing emphasis on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) framework further underscores the demand for governance professionals who can expertly navigate these requirements. Despite the increasing need for these specialised services, there remains an acute shortage of qualified chartered secretaries to meet the demand.
Dato’ Akbar further highlighted the distinctive benefits of the programme, “Our CGQP is a premier choice for aspiring chartered secretaries and governance professionals due to its rigorous standards and international recognition. The programme covers essential subjects such as company secretarial practice, interpreting financial accounting, company law, corporate governance, boardroom dynamics, risk management, and more, all of which equip our members to meet global benchmarks. We are committed to upholding the gold standards that prepare professionals to contribute effectively to the development of organisations. By maintaining these standards, we support their growth, ensuring they are well-prepared to excel in complex regulatory environments and drive progress on an international scale.”
