Yayasan Jantung Kongenital Malaysia (YJKM), in collaboration with the Malaysian Paediatric Cardiac Society (MPCS), is thrilled to share the heartening results of the Heart Heroes Charity Run 2024. This inaugural run, held on 18th August 2024 at the University Malaya (UM) Arena, attracted around 700 participants and raised RM40,000 to support children and families grappling with congenital heart disease (CHD).
Congenital heart disease, the most prevalent birth defect globally, impacts 1 in every 100 babies. In Malaysia alone, this means approximately 5,000 babies are born with CHD each year. The condition, marked by structural heart abnormalities, poses significant lifelong challenges. Although the exact cause remains unknown, effective surgical interventions can dramatically enhance quality of life, with nearly 3,000 individuals requiring at least one heart surgery during their lifetime.
Eric Tan Chin Zhia, YJKM CEO and Heart Heroes Run Co-Chair, shares that, "We have been planning a charity run for a long time, so it's great to finally be able to hold this run together with the support of all our collaborators. We hope we can raise more funds for CHD patients in the future and make a real difference in their lives."
The Heart Heroes Charity Run 2024 featured both a 5km and a 1.2km run, catering to participants of all ages and fitness levels. In addition to the runs, the event offered a range of engaging activities, including free dental check-ups and special activities designed for children. These added features helped create a vibrant and family-friendly atmosphere.
The success of this year’s event was greatly supported by numerous generous sponsors, including Le Meridien Putrajaya Hotel, Be Pharmacy, Cardiac Vascular Sentral Kuala Lumpur (CVSKL), DHL Global Forwarding, TDC Group, Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara, Mead Johnson Nutrition, Dimensi Tenaga, Kementerian Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan, Farm Fresh Malaysia, HelloDoktor, Paragon Vest, F&N Malaysia, Nestlé Malaysia, and T5Dennis. Their contributions were crucial in driving the event’s success.
The funds raised will be directed towards YJKM’s Congenital Heart Surgery for all program, which provides crucial funding for corrective surgeries for children from underprivileged families. Additionally, the money will enhance pediatric cardiology services and offer financial aid to low-income families affected by CHD across Malaysia. The event also succeeded in raising public awareness about congenital heart disease and reinforcing YJKM’s role as a leading advocate for CHD patients and their families.
Yayasan Jantung Kongenital Malaysia, also known as the Malaysian Congenital Heart Foundation, has been dedicated to improving the lives of those affected by congenital heart disease. The foundation’s initiatives include sponsoring heart surgeries for B40 families and providing essential medical equipment to local heart centers. To date, YJKM has invested over RM500,000 in supporting CHD patients, reflecting its deep commitment to this vital cause.
As a tax-exempt foundation with audited financial reports, YJKM ensures transparency and accountability in its operations. Donations to YJKM are tax-exempt, providing a meaningful way for the public to support this important mission.
