First-of-its-kind Illustrated Children’s Book Brings PM Anwar’s Life Journey for Young Minds

  1. The new illustrated book introduces children to PMX, and is the first in a planned series on Malaysia's past and present leaders.
  2. This book gives young readers an inspiring example of qualities.

The story of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is often shared in biographies and even movies, but for the first time, it's told through the eyes of a child. Titled Anwar Ibrahim: PMX Perjuangan Perdana, this colourful and illustrated book, written in simple Malay, makes it easy for children to learn about Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister (PMX).

Making its debut, the inspiring journey of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim — fondly known as PMX — is now being told through a children’s book. Titled ‘Anwar Ibrahim: PMX Perjuangan Perdana’, this fully-coloured and illustrated book is written in simple Malay language, making it easy for children to learn about Malaysia’s 10th Prime Minister.

Written by Leela Chakrabarty and illustrated by Emiree Fazrin, the book begins with Anwar’s formative years from his childhood through his schooling and higher education, before diving into his adult years and political career. Born in Cherok Tok Kun, a small village near Bukit Mertajam, Penang, he started his education at SK Stowell Bukit Mertajam.

He later furthered his studies at Universiti Malaya Kuala Lumpur, where he developed his leadership skills through various movements and clubs, an experience that sparked his interest in politics and helped shape his path to becoming Prime Minister.

According to Publishing Manager Puru Raman, this is the first book on PMX written for school-age readers. The author was inspired to tell his extraordinary journey—spanning 25 challenging years, including betrayal and setbacks, before finally becoming Prime Minister.

“Despite the challenges he faced, the Prime Minister’s resilience in overcoming those obstacles and struggles, is a story worth sharing. “I hope that the younger generation can learn valuable lessons from his life—principles such as perseverance, determination, and the importance of hard work,” he said.

The book took a year to complete, with six months for research and writing, and another six months for the illustrations. This is the first book in a series to be written and illustrated on both current and past leaders of the country.

“We want school children to know about leaders who worked hard for the country and made sacrifices to help build the nation. The next generation is the future, and it’s important to inspire them to stay hopeful and strong, even when times are tough.”

The book is currently available in Malay, with plans to translate it into other languages, including English, Mandarin, and Tamil, in the future depending on demand. Published by PEN International Sdn Bhd, PMX Perjuangan Perdana is priced at RM24.90 at major bookstores like Popular, Kinokuniya, MPH, and other independent bookshops.
