UNIQLO Strengthens Environmental Commitment with RM200,000 Donation to Global Environment Centre

Third consecutive year of funding conservation efforts through in-store paper bag proceeds

Global apparel retailer UNIQLO strengthens its commitment to environmental conservation with a RM200,000 donation to the Global Environment Centre (GEC) supporting mangrove rehabilitation efforts in Malaysia. This marks the third consecutive year that UNIQLO has channelled proceeds from its paper shopping bag charge towards environmental conservation initiatives, reinforcing its long-term commitment to protecting natural ecosystems.

In collaboration with GEC, the contribution will fund the protection of the coastline in Mersing, Johor, through the installation of wave breakers to strengthen coastal resilience, as well as the restoration of one hectare of degraded mangrove forest in Kampung Tenglu Laut. The project will reduce the risk of flooding and erosion especially during the East Coast Monsoon season, where the area is vulnerable to strong waves.

“At UNIQLO, we always seek to contribute meaningfully to our local communities as a way to give back. As we celebrate UNIQLO’s 15th anniversary in Malaysia, we continue to strengthen our long-term commitment to environmental awareness, preservation, and sustainability. Over the past three years, proceeds from our paper bag initiative have been directed toward meaningful conservation projects across the country. This year, we are proud to support GEC’s critical work in rehabilitating mangroves, natural barriers that not only protect coastal communities from floods but also support biodiversity. Our aim is to create a lasting positive impact for both people and the planet,” said Dawn Chow, Director of Sustainability and Corporate Public Relations, UNIQLO Malaysia.

Faizal Parish, Director of GEC, said “We are grateful for UNIQLO’s support towards our rehabilitation efforts, and its broader commitment to raising environmental awareness. Partnerships with corporations like UNIQLO support our ongoing efforts to rehabilitate local mangrove ecosystems and foster effective cooperation among various stakeholders. These partnerships also enable us to engage local communities in raising awareness of the importance of mangrove protection, while also enhancing community capacity through knowledge transfer and active participation in conservation efforts.”

The donation will support a range of activities, including site preparation, construction of a 100-meter wave breaker to strengthen coastal protection, mangrove tree planting to rehabilitate one hectare of degraded forest, maintenance, monitoring, and community engagement initiatives to ensure the long-term success of the rehabilitation project. Community action will include mobilising the community members to construct the wave breaker, establish a community mangrove nursery and plant and maintain the mangrove seedlings. The project will also enhance the awareness of the importance of conserving coastal forests and mangroves to protect communities from storms and climate change.

This year marks UNIQLO’s 15th anniversary in Malaysia, a milestone underscoring its long-standing commitment to sustainable innovation and local impact. From protecting the environment to uplifting communities, UNIQLO continues to integrate sustainability and social responsibility into its business in Malaysia.

Since 2020, UNIQLO introduced responsibly harvested, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper shopping bags. The RM0.30 charge for paper bags in stores is part of UNIQLO’s broader efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastic materials and encourage eco-conscious shopping behaviours. Customers are also encouraged to bring their own reusable bags when shopping at UNIQLO stores to further contribute to a greener future.

In previous years, proceeds from the paper bag charge have supported reforestation efforts at Taman Tugu and the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), helping to preserve urban green spaces and promote biodiversity. UNIQLO has also renewed its partnership with Taman Tugu to support programmes such as the Plant Giveaway and Plant & Hunt programmes, which encourage families and communities to engage in sustainability-focused activities and reduce their carbon footprint.

ASEAN Change Management Conference 2025 Returns with Stronger Regional Voice

  1. The conference promises deeper impact, real conversations, advancing results and a united regional voice for change.
  2. It will highlight on digital transformation, people-first approaches, strong leadership and real results across Southeast Asia.

Building on the success of its impactful debut last year, the ASEAN Change Management Conference 2025 (ACMC) returns to Kuala Lumpur on 1–2 October, uniting leaders and practitioners across Southeast Asia for bold leadership and a people-first focus.

With the theme ‘Advancing Results, Change Done Right!’, ACMC 2025 promises deeper regional engagement, stronger collaboration, and practical insights that go beyond theory into real-world transformation. Organized by K-Pintar Sdn Bhd, a leader in corporate learning and transformation for over 20 years, this year’s conference looks to position change not merely as a necessity, but as a skill to be honed.

“ACMC 2025 is about equipping leaders and change practitioners to implement change with precision and long-term impact. In a region as diverse and dynamic as ASEAN, change cannot be imported, it must be interpreted. And this year, we’re moving from awareness to action,” said R.A. Thiagaraja, Chairperson of ACMC and CEO of K-Pintar.

ACMC 2025’s speakers lineup includes experts from England, Poland, Africa, India, Singapore, and Malaysia — bringing global ideas together with local experience to talk about the real challenges in ASEAN.  What sets 2025 apart is renewed emphasis on Asean-rooted strategies, candid conversations, and practical applications of change leadership, especially in sectors undergoing rapid transformation.

“We’re bringing together global experts and regional practitioners to co-create solutions that work here, not in theory, but in the trenches of actual transformation. If we want resilient organizations and empowered communities, we must stop treating change as a checkbox and start treating it as a core discipline”, added Thiagaraja.

The conference centers on five topics: Trends & Innovation, Organizational Culture, Psychology & Neuroscience, Change Leadership & Fundamentals, and Digital Transformation. These subjects will be explored through masterclasses, interactive workshops, leadership dialogues and design sprints, offering participants practical tools they can apply in real-world settings.

INTAN (the National Institute of Public Administration) has come on board as a strategic collaboration partner for ACMC 2025, bringing in the perspective of Malaysia’s public sector. This partnership reflects the government’s continued efforts to drive innovation and build a more forward-looking public service. It is in line with the values of Malaysia MADANI, which supports new ideas and changes that benefit the people.

The government’s training arm, INTAN fosters innovation through courses and workshops, including change management, guided by initiatives such as the Public Service Reform Agenda. It also offers leadership development programmes that draw on public sector best practices and global updates in management and policy,

INTAN hopes the public servants joining ACMC 2025 will stay updated and involved in global change management developments.

In addition, this year’s ACMC is expected to play a role in fostering the development of a long-term, ASEAN-based community of change practitioners. In collaboration with the PMI Malaysia Chapter, Institut Koperasi Malaysia (IKMA), PIKOM, GBS, Prosci (USA) and other international organizations, the conference aims to support the establishment of a sustainable regional ecosystem focused on advancing the profession of change management.

As organizations across ASEAN face increasing complexity, speed of change, and digital disruption, ACMC 2025 invites leaders, change practitioners, and decision-makers to step forward and shape a future that is bold, inclusive, and rooted in action.

ACMC 2025 is expected to attract 500 participants from across the region. The conference is now open for registration at https://aseanchangemanagementconference.com/.

As the environmental management arm of WHB, Worldwide Entech continues to lead the way in delivering long-term solutions in waste management, aligned with the Group’s vision of creating sustainable value for Selangor and beyond.  Worldwide Entech’s latest projects in delivering sustainable infrastructure and unlocking new potential for environmental management include the development of three waste-to-energy projects in Selangor.

Survey Shows Steady Advancement of Sustainability Efforts in Malaysia

Schneider Electric’s Green Impact Gap Survey Uncovers Key Barriers and Opportunities as Malaysia Prepares for a More Sustainable Future, with Tribeca Serviced Hotel Leading by Example

Schneider Electric, the leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, today announced that its annual Green Impact Gap showed a steady trajectory in sustainable transformation among businesses in Malaysia. The survey, in partnership with Milieu Insight, aimed to identify the intention-action gap among companies in Malaysia that undertake sustainable business practices, and the investment or tangible commitment required to achieve their internal goals. This year’s survey results launch was held at the Tribeca Serviced Hotel by Millennium, a smart building that embodies energy efficiency, reduced carbon emissions, and enhanced occupant comfort.

A total of 500 business leaders in Malaysia participated in the survey, where middle to senior-level executives were asked to respond to a series of questions about their sustainability priorities, goals, commitments, and efforts. The 2024 results showed steady progress in Malaysia’s sustainability efforts, with 93% of Malaysian companies reporting that they have set sustainability goals, and 45% have successfully turned those goals into actionable strategies.  With a variance of less than 5% as compared to the 2023 results, the gap is considered stable.

Eugene Quah, Country President of Schneider Electric Malaysia, said: “In Malaysia, that future is already taking shape. The government has taken bold steps to embed sustainability into the national agenda. From the National Sustainability Reporting Framework to the mandatory ESG disclosures for listed companies, Malaysia is recognised for aligning itself with global standards such as the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), ensuring transparency and accountability. This year’s results reflect a steady trajectory in Malaysia’s sustainability journey, with more work to be done for ambition to turn into action.”

The survey also identified key barriers and opportunities to narrow the gap by boosting momentum and supporting further initiatives to promote sustainable business practices. Respondents highlighted barriers such as economic uncertainties (56%), internal budget constraints (47%), poor incentives (46%), lack of priority (40%), and regulatory and policy issues (35%).

Schneider Electric Highlights Urgent Need for Proactive Sustainability in the Real Estate Sector

Schneider Electric has identified three critical areas where the real estate industry must take decisive action to drive sustainability and resilience.

Firstly, with climate change no longer a distant threat, businesses must shift from reactive to proactive strategies. By leveraging digital tools, predictive analytics, and integrated energy and sustainability management systems, organisations can monitor risks in real-time, forecast disruptions, and optimise energy usage, enabling them to reduce carbon emissions, cut costs, and meet rising ESG expectations.

Secondly, energy security remains a pressing concern, highlighting the need for diversified and resilient energy strategies. Schneider Electric advocates for the adoption of renewables, microgrids, and smart energy management to ensure that sustainability efforts are both impactful and future-proof.

Thirdly, Schneider Electric acknowledges that limited resources and internal resistance can hinder businesses' progress in complying with the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA). “That is why we work closely with our partners to align strategy with action, demonstrate quick wins, and embed sustainability into the core of business operations. When sustainability is treated as a strategic priority, it becomes a powerful driver of long-term value. That’s where we come in, not just with digital tools and technologies, but with support through partnerships, guidance, and shared expertise,” Quah said.

In line with the survey findings, a thought-provoking panel discussion was held under the theme "Narrowing the Green IMPACT Gap: Digitalisation for Greater Energy Efficiency in Buildings". The session brought together key voices in the energy and sustainability space, including Amutha Socklingam, Principal Assistant Secretary of the Energy Sustainability Division of the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA); Ir. Ts. Zulkiflee Umar, Director of Energy Efficiency & Conservation at the Energy Commission Malaysia; Wong Wen Chet, Executive Director of Millennium Welt Land Sdn Bhd; and Jackson Seng, Vice President of Digital Energy at Schneider Electric. The panel explored the critical role of digitalisation in accelerating energy efficiency and offered actionable insights for building owners and industry stakeholders.

Tribeca Serviced Hotel Charts a Bold Part, From Digitisation to Decarbonization

The timely launch and discussion were held at the Tribeca Serviced Hotel by Millennium, a smart building with reduced energy consumption, a lower carbon footprint, and enhanced tenant comfort. Tribeca leads the way in sustainable urban development, guided by Schneider Electric’s 3-step approach and supported by its EcoXpert partner, Advance Industrial Solutions Sdn Bhd also an Energy Service Company (ESCO) registered under Suruhanjaya Tenaga, setting a benchmark for others in the industry to follow.

  1. STRATEGIZE – The journey began with a strategic assessment of energy flows and infrastructure, conducted through an energy audit. This revealed that the majority of energy consumption stems from air conditioning systems, with lighting and plug loads contributing to a lesser extent.
  2. DIGITIZE – To support data-driven decision-making, Tribeca has already installed the EcoStruxure Power Monitoring Expert (PME) system, laying the foundation for real-time energy insights. Currently in the digitisation phase, Tribeca is leveraging the PME system to gain full visibility into energy consumption patterns. Real-time monitoring is being implemented across key loads, including HVAC systems, lighting, common areas, and tenant usage. This phase also involves establishing a baseline of energy performance, with Phase 1 focusing on data collection at the main incomers.
  3. DECARBONIZE – Looking ahead, Tribeca’s decarbonization strategy will follow four key steps: establishing a baseline and benchmarking energy use over the next three months (with potential expansion to individual AC monitoring); setting a 3% energy reduction target within the first year by prioritizing quick wins like lighting retrofits and HVAC optimization; implementing decarbonization measures over 6 to 18 months including exploring rooftop solar and carbon offsetting; and continuously monitoring progress using PME analytics to guide regular reviews and strategy adjustments.

“We are proud to lead the way in sustainable building transformation and to host the launch of the Green Impact Gap survey here at Tribeca,” said Wong Wen Chet, Executive Director, Millennium Welt Land Sdn Bhd. “Our journey toward decarbonization reflects what’s possible when innovation meets commitment. We hope our efforts will inspire other building owners and real estate players to take bold steps toward a greener, more energy-efficient future.”
