SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of SIRIM Berhad, launched its latest testing facility, the brake testing laboratory, making it the only commercial test house in the Southeast Asian region to have such test facility.
“Local brake pad manufacturers who previously had to send their products overseas for costly testing will benefit in terms of lower cost of testing at SIRIM QAS International,” said Mohd Azanuddin Salleh, Managing Director of SIRIM QAS International Sdn Bhd during the launch of the testing lab here recently.
“The quality of brake friction materials and the braking system as a whole is critical to the safe operation of a motor vehicle, and consequently, the safety of the driver and passengers of the motor vehicle as well as other road users.
“Therefore, it is important that the components are tested and certified to prevent low quality and counterfeit brake components from coming into the market,” he added.
With the new testing facility, SIRIM QAS International can perform material test, performance test and determine the friction value on the brake pad and shoe assemblies and brake disc or drum test for vehicles weighing less than five tonnes.
Under the MS1164 for road vehicles, replacement brake lining assemblies and drum brake linings for power-driven vehicles are tested to see if they are following the specification.
The facility also ensures that vehicles are tested following the UN Regulation Reg. No. 90 - Uniform provisions concerning the approval of replacement brake lining assemblies, drum brake linings and discs and drums for power-driven vehicles and their trailers.
The establishment of the brake testing laboratory will also support the implementation and enforcement of the “Trade Descriptions (Marking of Replacement Brake Lining Assembly) Order 2014”, a regulation under the Trade Descriptions Act 2011, as well as UNECE R 90, which is a broader globally-accepted technical regulation incorporated into the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) Rules 2016 under Road Transport Act 1987.
These laws are intended to safeguard motorists and prevent local manufactured as well as imported replacement brake lining assemblies, drum brake linings as well as discs and drums of dubious quality from being offered for sale locally.
