ISKANDAR PUTERI, 5 July 2022 – The top UK university in the country, University of Southampton Malaysia (UoSM) today launched its new campus in Eco Botanic, Iskandar Puteri. The launch of the new campus coincides with the celebration of UoSM’s 10th anniversary in Malaysia.
The event was graced by YB Dato' Dr Badrul Hisham bin Kassim, the Chief Executive of Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), Dato’ Chang Khim Wah, President and CEO of Eco World as well as a representative from the British High Commission in Malaysia.
As the first international branch campus for the University of Southampton, UoSM provides Malaysian and international students with state-of-the-art facilities for an outstanding learning experience as well as a selection of programmes with a research-led curriculum that meet the demands of the ever-changing workforce.
Professor Rebecca Taylor, the Chief Executive Officer of UoSM said, “Our new campus is an important part of the expansion of UoSM and demonstrates our unwavering commitment to bringing academic, research and institutional excellence to young Malaysians and students from around the world. The new 150,000 square foot campus is designed to cater to UoSM’s growing student population and can accommodate up to 2,000 students. It features new facilities including four Electrical and Electronics Laboratories, an Aerospace Laboratory (equipped with a wind tunnel), a Design Studio, a Business Experimental Laboratory, a 12-terminal Bloomberg Suite and a 10,000 square foot library with an attached computer suite. The campus is equipped with open learning spaces and lecture halls that can seat up to 200 students. Students also have easy access to a wide range of restaurants, cafes, shops, and medical facilities located nearby.

The University of Southampton Malaysia is a leading research-intensive international branch campus. Recent successes include the creation of B-MICA, a biodiesel transesterification reactor using cutting edge microfluidics and microwave heating technologies. This, led by the Head of Research, Associate Professor Dr Ng Jo-Han, has shown that utilising the microwave technique successfully consumed less energy and minimised reaction time. Through this innovation, the research team strives to play a role in bringing the biodiesel industry a step closer to carbon neutrality as per UoSM’s vision to provide a platform to inspire the most talented minds to change the world for the better.
At the event, Dr Ivan Ling, Assistant Professor in Electrical and Electronic Engineering reflected on his journey with UoSM. He said, “I am grateful for the opportunities UoSM has given me. As a PhD graduate of the University of Southampton, I have been able to pursue my interest and research in the area of sensor technologies, and as an Assistant Professor at UoSM I am proud to be educating and inspiring the next generation of future leaders.”
UoSM offers a selection of research-led programmes in Engineering, Computer Science, Business Management, Business Analytics, Business Entrepreneurship, Economics, Finance, Accounting & Finance, Marketing and Actuarial Science at the foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The programmes offered by UoSM are taught and examined to the same standards as those delivered at the University of Southampton UK. The University also recognises the importance of rewarding academic excellence and achievements through its scholarship scheme in the form of up to 100% tuition fee waiver for its foundation and undergraduate students.
UoSM is the top UK University in Malaysia, ranked 78th according to the QS World University Rankings 2023. The University’s Master of Engineering in Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme is ranked number one in the UK, according to the Guardian University Guide, 2022; while its Master of Engineering in Aeronautics and Astronautics programme is ranked number four in the UK, according to the Complete University Guide 2023. Besides its Engineering programmes, the university’s Marketing programme also ranks number seven whilst its Computer Science programme is among the Top 20 according to the Complete University Guide 2022.
