Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) has appointed Datuk Low Kian Chuan as their new chairman, effective July 27.

In a statement, MTC said Low who succeeded Datuk Gooi Hoe Hin possessed vast experience in the timber industry.

Among Low’s notable achievements is the idea of producing premium grade laminated scantlings or lamscants for niche markets which resulted in the registered trademark called Lamtec Malaysia, a label for premium wooden laminated scantlings in 2004.

“I look forward to working closely with all my industry colleagues in this new position.” said Low.

Low was the executive chairman of Low Fatt Wood Group of Companies, president of Malaysian Wood Industries Association (MWIA) from 2005 to 2007 and Trustee on MTC’s Board and president of the Malaysian Timber Association (MTA) from 2015 to 2017.

Aside from his new position as the chairman of MTC, Low is the advisor of MWIA, secretary-general of the Associated Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, treasurer general of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, an independent non-executive director of the Bank of China and a board member of several government and corporate bodies.

After graduating from the Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada with a Bachelor of Economics and an Advanced Diploma in Business Administration, Low started his career in the timber industry by working at his father’s sawmill in Terengganu.
